An Introduction to Capodimonte Vases, Figurines and Lamps:

By RossCampbell

Capodimonte refers to a particular style of figurines and ornaments. There are Christmas ornaments, lamps, statues, vases and Precious moments figurines made in this particular style.  Prices vary depending on what particular ornament you buy, where it is made and how old it is.

The History:

Capodimonte has an interesting history dating back to the time with Charles of Bourbon was king of Naples in the mid 1700s.  As the story goes, the making of hard porcelain was a well-kept secret amongst the Chinese and Japanese during Charles’ reign and many of Europe’s finest chemists were desperately trying to unlock the secret to spread the trade onto the European continent.  The few businesses that were successful in this attempt were leery of sharing the secret with others so each succeeding endeavor had to start from scratch in their experimentation.

Charles’ factory was one of the few successful enterprises, which managed to operate for 64 years producing dinnerware and other items.  Afterwards, Ferdinand IV founded a second company.  His trademark was a crown placed over the capital letter N in a blue glaze.  The region where the factories operated was Capo di Monte, Italy, which translated means “head of the mountain.” Because the products made within these factories were all made in this same area, they became known by the name of the town.

Nowadays, Capodimonte refers to a particular style, not a brand name.   Interestingly enough, these items are no longer just made in Italy.  Lladro, a Spanish company, produces a large number of items in this particular style.  China also produces these items as well.  In fact, unless you are an expert, it can be difficult to distinguish where a particular item has been made.

Prices and Options:

If you are looking for a statue, you fill find that the prices vary wildly.  You can purchase one for under $50. However, some are genuine antiques and cost well over $5,000.  A lot depends on what particular figurine you want to buy, how old it is and how large it is.

A lamp will naturally cost more than a figurine.  No matter what particular lamp you buy, you will find it to be very decorative and an enhancement to your living room or bedroom décor.  There are some that cost between $50 - $100; however, most of them cost at least $100 or more.   Be sure the design of the lamp matches well with your living room or bedroom furniture before purchasing it.

If you are looking for a vase, you will find that these come in different sizes.  The style can be easily recognized; they are often decorated with lace, flowers, ribbons, cherubs, roses or rose buds.  While the size of the vase is a factor in the price, a lot also depends on how old the vase is; rare or hard to find smaller vases often cost more than some of the larger ones.

Online retailers are the best place to purchase these items.  There are a number of online retailers that specialize in selling antique items; these places have a wide selection and good prices.  Several good online retail sites that fit this description are eBay, Tias.com, Bonanzle and Go Antiques.

When purchasing such items online, it is very important to read the description.  Often the items are used; some items are sold in near perfect condition while others may be slightly chipped.  It is also important to note that the listed price may or may not include shipping.  It is noted on the site whether the particular item is shipped free or not; it depends on the particular seller who has posted the item on the site.  It is also important to note whether the item can be returned or not.

I have 2 capo di monte figures that I would like to sell but not sure how much they are worth, if anything. I have looked on various sites and can't find ones like them. I think they could have been bought around 1960/1970's. One is a tramp sitting on a bench with what looks like a piece of cloth with an apple and knife. It stands approx 7" high.It has a number under the bench 1529 The other is a little larger, 12" this is what looks like a carpenter. He has a stool on his knee and string/rope in his hands. It has a number under the base 17.92 in gold ink. Both have the capo crown marks.

I can send photo's if anyone can help.
