What to Expect with Liposuction Recovery

By

Liposuction recovery can depend on a number of factors.  Most patients experience discomfort during the recovery process, but it is important that they allow themselves time to heal and do not aggravate the afflicted area.  Many who are recovering from a liposuction procedure may even return to work after about a week and a half, but the recovery process will still take longer.

What Occurs During Liposuction Recovery?

The pain level during recovery can range from mild to severe.  In any case, a doctor may prescribe pain medication in order to alleviate the discomfort.  This can last from two days to two weeks.  Of course milder cases may not require as much time and medication as a severe pain case.  During this time, the patient must refrain from exercise other than walking.  It is recommended that one in recovery not exercise for at least two to four weeks after the procedure.

Swelling may last from two weeks to two months or more.  The patient can use a body compression garment to reduce and relieve swelling.  If needed, a massage therapist may be called for lymphatic drainage and also to relieve a patient from itching, but this option should first be discussed with a physician.  Bruising may also last from about two to four weeks and numbness can last for several weeks.  The final results of the procedure may be visible after a month but the process can also take up to six months to finally show.

A patient can take several steps to assure a faster recovery.  It is important to keep hydrated during the process but alcohol should be avoided two days before and after the procedure.  Patients are advised not to place ice packs over the liposuctioned areas, apply plastic bandage or hydrogen peroxide to the incisions or soak in bathtubs, Jacuzzis, swimming pools or natural bodies of water for at least a week after the procedure to reduce risk of infection.  Patients should also take steps to reduce the risk of fainting at home.  If possible, a patient should have someone stay with him or her to help around the house.  It is also helpful to keep cold drinks, medications and towels at the bedside.

Other Factors of Liposuction Recovery

Many patients are groggy for about 12 hours after the surgery.  Some patients may feel variations in stamina during the recovery process.  This may last from about four to six weeks.  They may also have a period of adjustment in getting used to their new bodies.  Emotional factors can include depression and mood swings as well as dealing with the reactions of others.  Some may be envious while others may ponder cosmetic surgery costs or look into breast implants prices.  If the emotional factors become to much, the patient may get an antidepressant description.

It is important to know that recovery is different from everyone.  Rhinoplasty recovery will be different from other types of recovery.  In any case it is important that the patient give his or her body the time it needs to heal.
